The Next Fest Hangover: How to Keep Your Steam Wishlist Velocity Alive

Steam Next Fest is the ultimate dopamine rush for an indie developer.

For seven glorious days, Valve turns on the traffic firehose. Your demo is being downloaded globally, Twitch streamers are playing your game organically, and your daily wishlist chart looks like a hockey stick. You are pulling in hundreds, maybe thousands, of wishlists a day.

Then, Monday at 10:00 AM Pacific hits. Next Fest ends.

On Tuesday, you check your Steamworks dashboard. The line chart has completely flatlined. Your daily wishlists plummeted from +850 down to +12. Panic sets in. You assume the hype is dead and your game is doomed.

Welcome to the Next Fest Hangover.

The post-Next Fest wishlist drop is the most misunderstood phase of indie game marketing. Your game didn’t suddenly become bad; you just lost the biggest algorithmic multiplier on the internet. Here is how to navigate the crash, reset your expectations, and keep your wishlist velocity high leading up to launch.

Establish Your “New Normal” Baseline

During Next Fest, your stats were artificially inflated. You cannot use those numbers as your benchmark.

However, a successful Next Fest shouldn’t just be an isolated spike. It should permanently raise your organic baseline. If you were getting +3 wishlists a day before the event, your goal after the event should be a new baseline of +10 or +15 a day.

You need to wait exactly 7 days after Next Fest ends to let the algorithmic dust settle. After that week, calculate your average daily wishlists. This is your new baseline. Every marketing effort from this point forward needs to be measured against this new, post-fest number.

The “Micro-Streamer” Retargeting Play

During Next Fest, dozens of small content creators likely played your demo. Most developers say “thank you” in Twitch chat and never speak to them again. That is a massive wasted opportunity.

Go back through your Twitch VODs and YouTube searches. Build a list of every creator who played your Next Fest demo.

Three weeks after the festival, push a minor update to your demo (new UI, a new weapon, bug fixes). Email those specific creators:

“Hey, thanks so much for playing the demo during Next Fest! I actually took your feedback about the UI and pushed an update today. Would love to know what you think.”

These creators already have a proven interest in your game. Retargeting them is the highest-converting way to manufacture another traffic spike without Valve’s help.

Track the ROI of Every Post-Fest Campaign

Once Next Fest is over, the training wheels are off. If you want to figure out how to keep wishlists high, you have to generate your own traffic via Reddit, TikTok, X, or YouTube.

But here is the trap: How do you know which platform is actually working?

If you post a TikTok and a Reddit thread on the same day, and your Steamworks dashboard shows a spike of 150 wishlists… which post actually caused it? If you don’t know, you are flying blind. You might spend the next three months grinding TikToks when Reddit was actually your golden goose.

Stop Guessing. Measure Your Marketing.

You can’t rely on Steamworks to decipher your marketing ROI. You need a dedicated tracking tool.

That is exactly why we built the Campaign Tracking feature inside Wishlist Engine.

Instead of staring at a confusing Steamworks graph, Wishlist Engine lets you measure exactly what works:

  • Drop a Pin: Launch a new trailer or a Reddit post? Drop a campaign pin on your timeline.
  • Isolate the Impact: Our engine calculates your exact baseline from the week prior, measures the 7-day spike after your pin, and spits out an exact ROI number.
  • Compare to Competitors: See if your post-fest velocity is matching up against rival games in your exact sub-genre.

The Next Fest hangover is brutal, but it’s just the beginning of your launch campaign. Treat your marketing like a science, track your data, and double down on the platforms that actually convert.

Stop guessing. Start tracking.

Don’t market your game in a vacuum. Track your competitors’ daily growth, measure the ROI of your marketing campaigns, and hit your target wishlist velocity.
